Red, white, and blue…. mostly blue

How could this be so bad?

When you think of July 4th, the first thing that comes to mind may not be food, but it is a holiday with lots of dangers for those of us trying to lose weight.  The traditional food is hot dogs, hamburgers, potato chips, potato salad, corn on the cob, watermelon, you know, picnic food.

So this year having the 4th fall in the middle of the week we decided to forgo the picnic and barbeque at home on the patio.   It started out as a healthy idea.  We went to the store and got some zucchini and yellow squash, some carrots, some sweet potatoes (because they have more fiber then russets which helps off-set the carbs!  Plus with a little cinnamon they taste like dessert.) Instead of hotdogs we decided to get some steaks.  We bought a couple of rib eyes that looked great at the butcher counter.

This is when the fibbing to MyFitnessPal begins.   I have been faithfully putting in to my diary everything I put in my mouth.   So yesterday we went to breakfast like we always do when I don’t have to work.  I had a cheese omelet, toast, hash browns, and coffee.  So far no danger, my calories are on track.  We are out shopping and playing.  We decide to skip lunch and enjoy an early dinner.  (Never skip a meal!).

Okay, so I start putting in the food from our little patio swaray (how stupid people spell soiree, and I am feeling pretty stupid right now).  I put in the veggies, and the sweet potato, and then the trauma started.  When I typed in Rib eye steak and entered the number of ounces I consumed……wholly cow….. it was enough calories for the whole day not just dinner.

My partner helped me out here.  He said that a true rib eye steak is marbled with fat and that the ones we had were more like New York so why don’t you enter same amount as a New York and see what happens.   What’s a little white lie to my android right?   It worked.  The calories fell under my limit.  Now I had to figure out how to delete an entry in MyFitnessPal, done.

Okay so technically I ate way to much food on the 4th and I didn’t even have lunch!  Hopefully, I have learned from this mistake and the little white lie makes me feel better.  Actually, on the 2nd I entered my best weight so far, 276 lbs.  That is down 4.5 pounds since my last weigh-in!  (I am afraid to get on the scales today.  Luckily I don’t need too.)

  1. Jeffrey,
I literally cannot remember the last time I had a steak. I think it was in 1969. Oh sure, I love steak but oh no. Just looking at that beautiful picture you posted gagged me. And that breakfast you had! My breakfast consists of one bowl of corn check with a sliced banana with 2% milk. After eating that I’m stuffed. For dinner tonight I’ll have half a grilled chicken breast (I usually eat boneless chicken when I do eat meat), potato salad (not low calorie, homemade but only a big tablespoon full) and one ear of corn slathered with real butter. Again, I am stuffed. I think once you get used to eating less your stomach shrinks. I’ve been able to keep my weight down to 160-165 – same as when I graduated from high school in 1959. Maintaining weight is a lifestyle change. Temporary measures don’t work in the long run. Good luck!
